Government to set up expert group for venture capital/private equity investment: FM Nirmala Sitharaman

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has announced that the government will set up a committee of experts to address regulatory issues facing venture capital and private equity players. The panel will propose “appropriate” measures.

Private equity and venture capital invested more than Rs 5.5 lakh crore last year, facilitating one of the largest start-up and growth ecosystems. Increasing this investment requires a holistic examination of regulatory and other frictions, Nirmala Sitharaman said.

“A committee of experts will be set up to examine and propose appropriate measures,” she added.

Ashley Menezes, Partner and COO, ChrysCapital and Head – Regulatory Affairs, IVCA, told PTI that the creation of an expert committee to address regulatory issues and other frictional issues that the PE industry is welcome to and the essential step announced by the Minister of Finance.

“It indicates that the government recognizes the contribution and role of the private equity industry, both historically and for the future. This will provide a platform to address the key issues faced and we look forward to having constructive discussion with this committee,” he said. added.
